14. Wiener Flüchtlingsball war der Initiative 'Flucht ist kein Verbrechen' gewidmet -
Prominente Unterstützung durch Bianca Jagger, internationale Anwältin für Menschenrechte.

Auch der 14. Flüchtlingsball zugunsten des Integrationshauses am 1. Februar 2008 war wieder restlos ausverkauft, mehr als 3.000 Menschen strömten ins Wiener Rathaus.

Dieses Jahr war der Flüchtlingsball der Initiative 'Flucht ist kein Verbrechen' gewidmet.
Auf Einladung von Integrationshaus - Vorstandssprecher Sepp Stranig war auch die internationale Anwältin für Menschenrechte, Bianca Jagger, zum Ball gekommen und sprach gemeinsam mit den StadträtInnen Sandra Frauenberger und Sonja Wehsely die Eröffnungsworte. 'Bianca Jaggers klarer Aufruf, die frühere langjährige Tradition Österreichs fortzusetzen und Flüchtlingen zu helfen, anstatt ihnen mit Misstrauen und Ablehnung zu begegnen, ist ein deutliches Signal an die Bundesregierung, Asylsuchende nicht in Schubhaft zu stecken!' betont Stranig.

Hier ein Auszug aus der Eröffnungsrede von Bianca Jagger:

"There are a lot of international declarations to protect refugees: the Declaration of human rights, UN Charters and Conventions and so on. I have been a human rights campaigner for approxi- mately twenty-five years. My experiences have taught me that so-called rights remain meaningless unless they are enforceable and enforced.
Nowadays in many parts of this world new regulations have come into effect, which bring refugee rejections and restrictions. Austria has a long tradition of helping refugees, especially in the 1950s, and during the time of Bruno Kreisky, whom I knew personally. I urge the Austrian government to continue to honour that tradition of assisting refugees.
We must understand that fleeing from persecution and poverty is not a crime. Refugees deserve help and respect, not distrust and refusal. Therefore I strongly support the campaign of Integra- tionshaus and other NGOs 'Fleeing is not a crime' initiative."
